These are one of a kind hand inked prints made from solar plate etchings layered with chine-collé. They are made with oiled based inks on acid free paper, adhered to cradled birch boards with a 1.5 “ depth and ready to hang.
How is this made?
A collagraph is made ( see collograph page for description), then transferred to a solarplate which is specially coated thin steel plate. Once the image is embossed into the surface via light exposure, the top layer gets washed away in water and what remains gets exposed in sunlight. Once dry, voilà! you have the inkable surface. The excess ink gets wiped away and the plate gets cranked through the press onto damp paper.
Chine-collé is where thinner paper is glued into the print with wheat paste during the printing process.

Here’s an idea of how these etchings look on the cradle boards.

What is a collagraph?
A collagraph produces a textured print. In this case it’s made by creating a textured surface on matboard with acrylic mediums of different consistencies, then mark making into the wet surface. Sometimes I add carborundum (same as the grit on sandpaper) of different sizes. All of these various consistencies grab the ink, resulting in different intensities. Once dry, the collagraph is then the plate that is inked and rolled through the press onto damp paper.
